Frank & Beryl Saunders
Frank & Beryl Saunders
Frank Saunders is a descendant of theGunggari
people which occupied the Maranoa River area of western Queensland for
many years prior to European settlement. Although Frank Saunders
belonged to the owing clan of his grand-father, he received his totem
from his mother and mother's brothers. Totems were stressed during
initiation, marriage and burial ceremonies.
Because the hand (Maranoa) was so important to the Gunggari
people's way of life, numerous hands were stenciled in the
Tombs Rock shelter on the Upper Maranoa River.
Frank chose Maranoa as a fitting reminder of his ancestral
people.
The artist's wife now receives royalties from the sale of these
products as Frank is now deceased.
Beryl Saunders and their daughter Lee Evans are also artists and
have designs in our range.
